Shyrdak rugs are rarely seen in the west due to the difficulty and expense of transporting them from the Tien Shan mountains and out of a land-locked country; and also due to the need for export licences.  It is necessary to have a good understanding of post-Soviet bureaucracy as well as local contacts in order to do business.

In 1993, Paul Philpott set up the first Save the Children Fund aid and development programme in Kyrgyzstan shortly after the fall of communism and has maintained close links with the country ever since.  In collaboration with local people, he has set up a micro-enterprise importing traditional felt rugs from this region, which are hand made by women's cooperatives.  A range of natural and bright colours, designs and sizes can be obtained.  Prices start at £500 and vary according to age, size and quality.
